Who makes this, and why it is free

What The Copybook is

A small independent project, not a company. It exists because 11+ preparation at home is mostly done by a parent who is not a teacher, working from books that give an answer key and no explanation. The useful thing to build was not another bank of questions. It was the working.

Why it is free

Taking money would mean registering a company, handling VAT, building accounts and holding payment details. None of that would make the practice better. Until there is a good reason to do it, we would rather not, and the absence of all that machinery is the reason the site can promise what it does below.

If a paid tier ever appears, it will be on the parent side of the site, it will be obvious, and everything that is free today will stay free.

What we do not collect

• No account, so no name, no email address and no password for your child.
• No age, no school, no year group.
• No stored scores. Results live in the page while your child is using it and are gone when the tab closes.
• No advertising and no third-party trackers on any page a child uses.

We count anonymous totals, such as how many times a topic was started, because we need to know which topics to write next. Those counters are not attached to a person and cannot be traced back to one.

How the questions are made

Non-verbal and verbal reasoning questions are generated. These question types are algorithmic by nature, which means the pool never runs out and your child never memorises the answers. Every generated batch is checked by a program that proves the figures are actually solvable, and then looked at by a person before it goes on the site.

Maths and English questions are written by hand. Comprehension passages are either original or out of copyright; we do not lift extracts from children's books that are still in copyright, which is the usual corner cut in this market.

Every question carries a worked explanation. It is a field the database will not let us leave empty, which is a deliberately awkward constraint to have imposed on ourselves.

What we are not

We are not a tutoring service, we do not predict outcomes, and we have no connection to any exam board, grammar school or local authority. Where the site shows a standardised score it is an estimate, and it says so: real standardisation adjusts for a child's age in months and differs by board and by area.
